I recently picked up the stellar new offering from legendary LA rock act Redd Kross. The band's classic "Neurotica" line-up that includes Steve McDonald (who has been extremely busy holding down bass duties for OFF!) is back at it. Redd Kross played their first show with Black Flag and shared members with the likes of Circle Jerks and Bad Religion, and with these tremendous ties they were originally lumped into the whole 80's hardcore punk scene with the likes of bands like the Minutemen that neither fit the mold of hardcore punk nor played by any of its rules. They certainly had the attitude and snarl of the harder edged punk acts from way back when but musically their sound leaned more towards garage rock and later an alt-rock and pop-punk vibe. Either way the key to this band has always been high energy rock and roll, and that notion is alive and well on Redd Kross' brand new record "Researching the Blues". The new record is a lively affair that successfully blends those garage rock leanings with pure driving rock and roll all with the punk attitude that the band was formed around back in 1978.
