I have to admit that I haven’t been a Yo La Tengo fan for very long, and I didn’t really even know them until a couple years ago when I read an interview with Jim James of My Morning Jacket where he talked about what an influence they were on his music. I immediately went and checked them out and if it weren’t for my buddy Ryan who pointed me in the right direction of where to start, I may have been lost due to sizable amount of music they have released since 1984. He reccommeded 1997’s “I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One”, and now I'm hooked. It's a tremendous record and I really dig their more psychedelic, trippy moments such as the 10 minute track “Spec Bebob”. I have been diving deeper into their catalog as of late and am really excited for September 8th, 2009 when YLT releases their 13th record entitled “Popular Songs”. According to a few reviews I’ve read this record is supposed to be Yo La Tengo at its best, building upon their already lengthy catalog. I can’t wait, and if the record is anything like the opening track “Here To Fall” available for preview and download below, it should be an awesome listening experience. Yo La Tengo are also going on tour and will be making a stop in Seattle October 22nd at the Showbox Sodo for $18, only $18 bucks!
In vinyl news Matador Records will be releasing “Popular Songs” on double vinyl that comes with a bonus LP, and has already re-released “I Am Not Afraid of You And I Will Beat Your Ass” and “And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out” as well.
