0 Rain Machine @ Neumos (10-1-09)

Last Thursday I ventured out kind of late to check out Rain Machine at Neumos. Rain Machine is the solo project of that fluffy headed guitarist/singer of TV on the Radio, Kyp Malone. Kyp is currently on tour in support of Rain Machine’s new self-titled record. From an initial listen, I thought the record incorporated much of the same elements that TVOTR are best known for, and songs like “Give Blood” could most definitely have been included on a TVOTR record. This intrigued me to enough to go see the man in a much more intimate setting than I had previously seen TVOTR in.

I was pleased with the show, as the rawness of the songs made for an energetic, and at times unpredictable experience. Kyp Malone’s unique vocal ability was front and center as he frequently went from his expressive falsetto croon to at times a banshee like screaming all in the same breath. Kyp’s fluid guitar playing was backed by a solid group of musicians with lead guitarist “Carmen” standing out. The set started out with some of his slower to mid-tempo songs and the band even cleared the stage at one point to let Kyp showcase his talents on the dark tune “Love Won’t Save You”. The show gained momentum towards the climax with “Free Ride” and the 11 minute “Winter Songs”, each of which crescendoed into some pretty awesome stoner jam sessions not present on the record. During TVOTR’s current break, I suggest checking out Kyp Malone’s Rain Machine in concert over just spinning the record because the record is curiously missing some of the best parts of the Rain Machine live experience. Though it will surely fill the void until the next TVOTR record and tour comes around. Check out my slideshow and a couple videos from the performance. Cheers!
