0 REVERB Fest Recap: Little Cuts, Visqueen, & Born Anchors (10-3-09)

Last Saturday was a busy day for live music in Seattle, and was one of many times recently where a big decision had to be made on which show to attend. If only it were possible to be in 3 places at once. The three big shows were of course the aforementioned Mastodon show at the Wamu Theater, the Undertow reunion at El Corazon, and Seattle Weekly’s big local music festival REVERB which took over 10 venues in Ballard. Like a good local music supporter and blogger I made an appearance before heading across town to Wamu Theater to bang my head. Out of the 30 bands I would have liked to see at REVERB I only had time for a select three.

Starting the festivities off at the Sunset Tavern was Little Cuts. Lead by Shins guitarist Dave Hernandez, Little Cuts is a noisy three piece garage rock band. I have to admit the fact that Dave was in Little Cuts had completely slipped my memory, but it was a nice surprise seeing him rock out little. Little Cuts’ music compared to The Shins is night and day, as Hernandez and crew are all about energetic rough around the edges rock with pop sensibilities. It was foot stomping fun, and an early afternoon wake up call.

Next on tap was Visqueen playing at the Salmon Bay Eagles all-ages venue. I showed up a little late and was relegated to the back of the venue hence no pictures. Visqueen deemed the afternoon set the all-ages record release party, as they were scheduled for a true release party later that night at The Croc for the 21+ crowd. Rachel Flotard’s voice sounded heavenly, as she lead her group through a number cuts such as “Hand Me Down”, “Ward”, and “Tall Grass” off their brand new record “Message to Garcia”. She is a charismatic individual and it looked like she was having a lot of fun mingling with the youngsters in the audience, as well as being up on a stage performing again.

Back over to my final stop of the afternoon to check out one of Seattle’s current bands to watch, Born Anchors. Born Anchors are a unique indie rock trio that has earned much positive press with their different twist on an age old formula of guitar, bass and drums. It’s driving and infectious and they played a great set to a packed Sunset Tavern, with tunes like “Deep Cuts”, “In Disguise”, and “Cascading” off their debut record “Sprezzatura”. Much deserved doors seem to be opening for the band as they will share a stage with other current buzz band Future of the Left, and …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead on October 13th at Neumos.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to enjoy the full local fruits that REVERB had to offer but the three bands I did see all put on great performances and made me happy that I spent my afternoon in my soon to be new home Ballard. Check out my slideshow, and my video of Born Anchors performing “Cascading”. Cheers!
