November 24th, 2009 - Municipal Waste @ El Corazon

Last Tuesday I got totally WASTED! Those forever touring hard partying thrash metal maniacs Municipal Waste were back in town and played their millionth show at El Corazon. I didn’t have a single adult beverage that night but was succumbed by the Waste’s shredtastic take on 80’s crossover instead. The venue was only half full which allowed for some pretty sweet circle pits, but the craziest part of the night was the multitude of 100lb string beans that immediately made the stage their own. Municipal Waste worked the crowd into a frenzy early; one after another kids bombarded their way on the stage then proceeded to back flip into a sparse crowd that was barely big enough to cushion their landings. These dare devils didn’t even seem to mind splatting on the floor once and while, most hopped up and went right for it again.

After seeing hundreds of metal shows, stage diving of this caliber was nothing new I suppose but for some reason on this night with the leaner attendance it seemed extra risky and just plain nuts. I personally have never possessed the testicular fortitude that a stage diver needs to flip onto a bunch of drunken metal heads, plus for as long as I can remember I’ve weighed twice as much as the kids who were taking the leaps all night anyway so be thankful I never landed your head.

Municipal Waste is on tour in support of their newest trashsterpeice via Earache Records “Massive Aggressive”. Tony Foresta’s vocal style is still very reminiscent of 80’s crossover singers like D.R.I.’s Eric Brecht after four records, but musically they have evolved and play a much heavier more pure form of thrash metal now than they did on their first record “Waste’em All”. I stumbled across the band when they opened for The Accused at their “Oh, Martha” CD release party at El Corazon in 2006. Let’s just say as awesome as it was seeing Blaine and Tommy tear it up, I ended up buying “Waste’em All” over “Oh, Martha” instead because Municipal kicked so much ass.

I was a happy man when they whipped out a couple from that first record including “Knife Fight” and “Mutants of War”, but the set covered their four records equally. You have to love songs titles like “Beer Pressure” and “Drunk As Shit” and if it weren’t for the lame no onstage drinking laws in this city surely these guys would have been downing beers with reckless abandon, not just singing about it. One of the best things about this band is truly their sense of humor, not only with their tongue-in-check song titles, but the guys are pretty friggin’ funny on stage too.

Ryan Waste’s guitar was a thing of beauty. What looked to me like a reworked Dime Slime, he made his shredding onslaught look easy on that beautiful piece of heavy metal hardware. LandPhil effortlessly laid down some monster bass riffs and at one point even launched into a lightning fast between song bass solo that Cliff Burton would surely have been proud of. Dave Witte on drums was the quiet one but only between songs, the man can bash with the best of them, and when Tony Foresta who was sporting his usual shorts, bullring and headband attire gave the signal for a circle pit the crowd enthusiastically obliged.

Municipal Waste came out swinging like they always do and put on a pretty kick ass thrash party for a cold Tuesday night. The show was a riot and Municipal Waste was the instigator. Cauldron, Off With Their Heads, and Phobia were also on the bill but unfortunately I missed them in my tardiness.
