0 [LIVE REVIEW] AFCGT / Our Love Will Destroy the World (NZ) @ Funhouse

Review and Videos by Nik Christofferson

January 9th, 2009 - AFCGT, Our Love Will Destroy the World, Dull Knife, Great Plains @ Funhouse (1-9-09)

AFCGT ascended upon the Funhouse last Saturday, playing their second gig in a month since announcing their new self-titled record for Sub Pop due out January 26th. I hit up both shows, and can say without a doubt this music is some exciting stuff. Probably not exciting for a casual music fan, but certainly exciting for fans of forbidding psychedelic noise rock. After seeing them for a more lucid second time, I realized that they didn’t play any of the songs off the soon to be released new record, nor did they play anything off their CD-R turned LP from what I could tell. I’m a little curious to what songs they actually played. I wrote down the set list and matched it with all resources I could find, no luck. Despite the confusion, it was another impressive performance, and a perfect brooding mess of apocalyptic free form psychadelia with hints of the A Frames' 'Black Forest' robotics.

Mark your calendar for their record release gig 2/27 at the Comet with Kinski. It should prove to be heavy on the new material, but possibly the unknown as well. I wouldn't put it past them.

The bill also included Great Plains, who sadly gained my attention after I missed their first set ever, Dull Knife, and New Zealand's one man wall of fuck Campbell Kneale aka Our Love Will Destroy the World. I can't say I listen to the drone genre much beyond Earth and Sunn O))), but anyone who uses a couple iPod touches, effects pedals, and a seldomly strummed guitar to create the ultimate in bleeding ear distortion while also kneeling on a rug is ok in my book.

Check out my videos of AFCGT, I couldn’t be happier on how they turned out; really capturing the ominous sounds and visuals of the evening.
