December 29th, 2009 - Jello Biafra and The Guantanamo School of Medicine / Akimbo @ Neumos

Punk legend Jello Biafra made a late announcement and rolled through town on his way to a NYE gig in Portland last Tuesday. Jello has just released a solid record with his new band The Guantanamo School of Medicine, and treated everyone in attendance to a rip roaring performance. The man who is now in his 50’s showed no evidence of slowing down and spent the majority of the hour and a half set in constant movement, accentuating the songs with his standard amusing mimes, and plenty of flailing limbs. Jello also wasted no time in spitting his usual far left political rhetoric, hitting topics such as California’s financial crisis and Obama’s perceived ineffectiveness thus far.

While of course his rants are interesting and entertaining, one can’t help mostly disregard his seemingly well researched propaganda due the extremist nature, but that’s not to say they aren't thought provoking. I did find out one interesting side note when looking into Jello’s politically charged musical career. He was runner up to Ralph Nader in the Green Party’s 2000 presidential nominee race.

The set included some choice Dead Kennedy’s tunes including a lyrically updated version of “California Uber Alles”, and “Let’s Lynch the Landlord” but the highlight was surely a shirtless Jello bringing it home with a riotous version of “Holiday in Cambodia” to close the main set. The show was far from over though as Jello summoned his band back to the stage for two encores, the final including “Bleed for Me”.

The mighty Akimbo opened the show, and was once again devastating. The best part about Akimbo’s set on this occasion was introducing them to SRG contributor Jerry Howard. He was blown away just as I have been on too numerous of occasions to count. Jerry with his trusty handheld video camera took some really great footage of the evening. I’ll keep this short and allow the videos tell the story.
