0 [LIVE REVIEW] Overwhelming Colorfast Reunion @ Sunset Tavern

Review and Videos by Nik Christofferson

January 2nd, 2010 - Overwhelming Colorfast @ Sunset Tavern

Well, I wasn’t the only one who battled a New Year’s Eve hangover to be at the Sunset for the first Seattle Overwhelming Colorfast show since 1995, and first reunion show in four years. By the positive energy in the air, and with a nice crowd of friends, family, and fans including myself on hand for the special opportunity, it seemed it couldn’t have happened at a better time or better place.

Founding original guitarist/singer Bob Reed flew up from the Bay Area where the band originated. He joined his brother and drummer Dan Reed (SRG’s QuitterDan) as well as Heather and Nick from The Riffbrokers for an excellent hour long set. Making appearances were Colorfast classics like “Toss Up”, and “Roy Orbison”, and Bob made sure everyone knew “She Said, She Said” was indeed not a Beatles cover, but the real deal-- it’s that good.

The first thing that came to mind was how great these songs sounded live. The impressively thick punk riffs did nothing but highlight Colorfast’s instantly catchy indie rock flare. There was a rumor floating around that Bob Reed hadn’t played guitar in the 6 months leading up to the reunion show practices. Whether it was true or not was lost in translation as Reed gave a solid performance, as did Dan who has stayed sharp playing drums in three local bands including new alt-country project “Low Land High”, Alice Cooper Tribute “Devil’s Food”, and Screaming Trees Tribute “Black Sun Morning”.

The show ended with a treat as Bob Reed brought up some old Seattle friends to join the party. First, Alien Crime Syndicate’s Joe Reinke jumped on stage for a cover of his former San Fran outfit The Meices’ “Don’t Let the Soap Run Out”. Next up was “Two Words” producer, one of Seattle’s best loved guitar heroes and according to Reed “the chieftain of rock from around the block”-- Kurt Bloch. Kurt strapped on his Flying V, and helped bring it home with a little Sabbath in the form of “Wheels of Confusion”. The Small Change and Paul Lynde Fan Club opened.
