2 [VIDEO] Smooth Sailing Destroys @ Blue Moon Tavern

Words and Videos by Nik Christofferson

So there’s this new metal band currently making a massive cacophony in our local dives. Make no mistake; Seattle’s Smooth Sailing is not your father’s yacht rock act. Instead a young and incredibly talented 5 piece tour de force, humbly making intensely beautiful and crushing metal right here in our own backyard. Smooth Sailing is a special band, not only sonically and musically, but they also boast a unique double bass guitar attack mostly unheard of in metal. At their most recent gig at the Blue Moon in the U District, Smooth Sailing systematically made mince meat of both The Keeper’s Andrew Chapman and my faces during a half hour set of eloquently finger tapped solos, furious breakdowns, and vocal hell fire amongst a backdrop of eerie fog and intense light show. Needless to say this band is way off the “Holy Fuck That’s Heavy” scale, and I’m not expecting Smooth Sailing to be playing stages that aren’t big enough to hold them for much longer. Discovering bands like this is one of my few reasons for getting up in the morning, so here is me saying if you dig metal don’t be stupid and check these guys out now. Your next chances are April 10th at Josephine or April 12th at the Comet. Here’s a taste of that Blue Moon performance.
