It’s not often metal bands get to throw down at the Sunset Tavern, today is extra special as two of Seattle’s best live metal acts share a bill. Honestly this show is seriously causing me to wish I hadn’t committed to a third day at Sasquatch. I am so contemplating hitching a ride back early, that’s how high of regard I hold this particular pairing of local bands.
Boasting an arsenal of blazing solos, whiplash inducing break-downs, and overall metal prowess, Smooth Sailing comes off as more of mast splitting hurricane on the high seas than some inland bay comfort cruise. One day I’ll have to get to bottom of why these five metal minions settled on their chosen moniker, but more important is the sheer magnitude of their sometimes mathy, sometimes melodic, and most of the time earth shaking brand of metal. Smooth Sailing have a lot going for them in the musicianship department, and it doesn’t help that they have also nailed down an energetic and dazzling stage show so early on in their existence. The right factors seem to be in place for this band to storm out of the gates and not look back, but for now this afternoon at the Sunset will have to do.
My favorite local band, The Keeper, have been writing with reckless abandon as of late, and Sunday they will unveil some brand new material. What will the wizard metal maestros have up their over-sized sleeves? My guess is BRUTALITY! From all reports the new stuff is "Heavy" with a ridiculously oversized H.
The Keeper resonates so deeply because these guys are metal fans through and through; taking lyrical cues from sword wielding legends like the late great Ronnie James Dio. The Keeper are one of the best live bands in town as well, thanks to a solid core group of musicians, and frontman Andrew Chapman’s tendency to insist on full audience participation. There really is no telling where Mr. Chapman might end up once the set starts-- on the bar, hanging from a PA speaker or face to screaming face. The Keeper rang in the Roanoke Tavern’s 15th birthday a couple weeks ago and will now take over the Sunset as part of Sunday Bloody Sunday. Do not miss this afternoon's gem. Obey!
VISS (formally Visceral) who are came off a long hiatus, and played their first show in over 5 years back on May 8th at Your Village Sucks! Fest opens the show.
