2 [WATCH OR DIE! #2] The Spits - "Terrorist Attack"

Words by Jerry Howard

True fact: The Spits rule. Their music kicks ass and, let's face it, these guys are hilarious. Just look at their video for "Terrorist Attack." The song follows Larry Cohen's bizarre film Q. It's one of those films you stumble across late night and sucks you in, which ultimately coincides with another three or four MORE beers. Yeah, you should have gone to bed earlier. That seven a.m. wake up call can summons the lambs, but this flick features a killer reptile tearing through New York and who could pass up such an elaborate plot line? I mean, shit, we're only human beings!

After seeing Q initially as a youngster, I spent the next few years trying to explain what I witnessed to my buddies. "What's the title?" They would ask. I had no idea. In fact, I didn't figure it out until I saw The Spits video last year. You remember the times before the net took off? Arguments would go on for years. Names of films would escape memory and only random, late night television could settle scores or trigger memories. Shit, how the hell did we live without the Internet?

If you want the Cliff Notes version of this bizarre flick, check out this video. The Spits (or someone who really likes The Spits) have managed to capture the crux of Q with "Terrorist Attack." While The Spits rip up the soundtrack, a flying dinosaur terrorizes the citizens of New York. Treats include a window cleaner beheaded while an upper crust lady witnesses in complete horror, a blue collar joe with a surly attitude gets what's comin' to him, and a rich kid getting ripped away from a casual dip.

Classic.

It's a tour de force of cinema, but the best part about the whole thing is quite clear: The Spits.

I found myself watching this video over and over. Every time I see the chick who looks like a dude hammering out push ups while the rich kid yawns, bored with his life of luxury, I laugh and cheer as the killer dinosaurs tears him away from his yuppie comfort zone and drops him onto Park Avenue, at least I infer it's Park Avenue. I really have no idea.

Also, the flick stars David Carradine. When the dinosaurs pops his head into David's domain, he receives a little rat-a-tat-tat from Dave's uzi. Don't fuck with Dave. Everyone knows that. Just check out Death Race 2000 and you'll see what I mean.

This prompts the best part of the video. After witnessing Dave's fury, his buddy does what any sensible dude would do - pounds a Budweiser (actually, another beer choice would make life better, but you have to take what's available).

Watch "Terrorist Attack" by The Spits. It rules.

"Check this shit out!"

  1. I read recently that terrorism is the new satanism, nothing else gets a real shock value anymore. Clearly, the Spits were well ahead of their time. Well done, Jerry!

  2. Dr. Gonzo - Your podcast was interesting. The 1984 theme was a good touch. What is the name of the hip hop song again? Have not heard that song forever. Didn't Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprosy cover it?
