0 TICKET GIVEAWAY: Nu Sensae | Broken Water | Haunted Horses

Vancouver's Nu Sensae recently received some hype in the form of Out Magazine's inclusion of drummer Daniel Pitout in their 100 most eligible bachelors list. While any publicity can be a boon for a great band, sexually objectifying one of the members has a tendency to diminish the fact that they really are a fantastic noise rock trio. Luckily, their music is turning at least as many heads as the hot guy behind the kit these days. After a listen through last year's Sundowning LP (Suicide Squeeze), you may find yourself equally as aroused by the intensity of Andrea Lukic's screeching death howls as they dynamically punctuate the restrained chaos held together by her driving bass rumbles, or the angular spasms of Brody McKnight's guitar as he prods at the sonorous mess like a little boy with a stick.

Supporting them this Sunday at Chop Suey will be Olympia's Broken Water, whose darkly lush psych-influenced sound harkens back to something almost forgotten, but gladly reinstated. In fact, both bands could be described as an updated version of what the best underground PNW bands were working to achieve twenty years ago, while their more conventional counterparts were getting sucked into the maelstrom of industry shenanigans.

Local boys Haunted Horses are starting off the night, and honestly, bills don't come more perfectly fit. Fans of any of these bands will undoubtedly love the others, and all are worthy of whatever random hugs and kisses lavished upon them afterwards. Oh, and hey, look at this! We're giving away tickets!

***To enter the drawing for a pair of tickets simply send an email to jake@seattlerockguy.com with "Nu Sensae" as the subject and your full name in the body. Winners will be drawn Saturday at 5pm, so do it, do it now. Good luck!***

1 TICKET GIVEAWAY: Mico De Noche | Mos Generator | Ancient Warlocks | Serial Hawk

Mico de Noche are one of those bands that we at SRG will always point to as a perfect embodiment of what this Cascadian underground rock scene is and should always be.  Their unrelenting brutality can absolve the most anguished listener of their pain, while uplifting those seeking pleasure with sheer headbanging revelry.  Even more epic and lush than the sum of their four parts, they create beauty in a wall of sludge and bellowed words.

Sadly, it is a rare opportunity these days to see Mico in all their glory.  It's nobody's fault; they're all busy dudes with many amazing projects to devote their time to.  But the advent of a brand new 3-song 7" EP on Violent Hippy Records gives us mossy beardos at least one more chance to rejoice.  Not only is it bringing the dudes to Chop Suey this Friday to cap off a great lineup, but this little bundle of vinyl goodness is a LONG-awaited follow-up to the 2009 split 10" w/Brothers of the Sonic Cloth, and despite its brevity is a welcome addition to the legacy of a band that has consistently pummeled us into delightful submission over the last decade plus.

In fact, with the permission of the band, we are offering up three copies of this baby to the winner and two runner-ups for a ticket giveaway (see details below).

Of course, Mico de Noche don't play with no slouches.  There is nary a stony itch that Mos Generator and Ancient Warlocks can't scratch.  Serious riffs, denim, and grins abound.  And it would be a sin not to address the tour kickoff of Serial Hawk, whose expansive, yet full-bodied flavor will make you wanna hold up your pint and cheers the one next to you.  (That was all a reference to beer -- know why?  Because Serial Hawk will fuck you up, that's why)  Come early, come all night long.

***To enter the drawing for a pair of tickets and a free copy of the Mico de Noche 7" simply send an email to jake@seattlerockguy.com with "Mico de Noche" as the subject and your full name in the body. While only one entry will win the tickets, we will draw two other winners of a free copy of the 7" (please note: these will only be redeemable at the show).  Winners will be drawn Thursday at 5pm, so don't fuck about. Good luck!***

Oh, and be sure to catch Serial Hawk on tour in March!

0 TICKET GIVEAWAY: Graveyard | The Shrine

Sometimes, you simply gotta rock, man.  You know?

Back in the early '00s, the underground heavy music scene started to veer away from clean vocals and riff-based rock and roll and towards throaty growling vocals backed up by complex time signatures and angular, anti-melodic guitar runs for whatever reason. Perhaps it was a reaction to the comparatively structured rock canon of the '90s, or the incessant 4/4 oonce-oonce of the fadtastic rave scene that dominated popular culture around the turn of the century (and has subsequently mutated into the dubstep plague that currently has its grips on the mainstream). Either way, shit got weird. And for the most part, it stopped actually, you know, rocking.  But now, in just the last few years, it seems that we are finally coming back around again. These things go in cycles, right?

After enduring a decade of music bent on challenging the listener -- often to the detriment of entertainment value -- we are now seeing more and more bands emerge and reach a comfortable level of success by bringing back the bluesy heavy metal sound of the seventies, mixed with the burly stoner jams of a post-Kyuss generation; focusing more on just rocking the fuck out with immediate, accessible riffs, and tuneful vocal runs. Sweden's Graveyard is one of these bands.  The kind of band that compels you to throw up the horns, wave whatever hair you have as to and fro as it will go, and flush your worries away with a few cans of cold suds.

After seven years and three full-length albums – their latest, the fantastic Lights Out, releasing late last year – these Nordic tourhounds are once again returning to the PNW this Wednesday, February 13th, at Neumos with their mates, LA's no-bullshit straight-up boozy rock trio The Shrine. We have a pair of tickets to give away to one of you crazy rock geeks.

***To enter the drawing for a pair of tickets to this show simply send an email to jake@seattlerockguy.com with "Graveyard" as the subject and your full name in the body. Winner will be drawn Tuesday at 5pm, so act fast. Good luck!***
