1 [LIVE REVIEW] Mudhoney Beerfest @ Neumos (2-8-10)

Live Review and Videos by Nik Christofferson

Ever go to a show on a weeknight and wonder: “Where do these people work? Do they even have jobs?” Of course a question like this in a time of a rather brutal recession might seem a little callous and inappropriate, but man did people seem tie one on at the free Mudhoney show / New Belgium beer release party thrown at Neumos last night. I admit I was a tad jealous by the beer swilling mass that sloppily paid homage to the Seattle legends, but there is no way I personally can take it to extent the Monday night crowd did when I have to be sharp and in the office by 7am. For those who like to rock and booze heavy on Monday nights, I salute you.

The show itself was fucking fantastic, and for the most part a mirror image of Mudhoney’s last Seattle show back in November ’09; give or take a few songs. As Mark revved up the crowd, more beer was worn than consumed. I’m pretty sure if I were pulled over last night, I probably would have had some explaining to do concerning the new cologne I was wearing from standing near the pit all night.

Once again the Mud began their set by treating everyone to Fang cover “The Money Will Roll Right In”, launched into a few from 2008’s The Lucky Ones, and then got down to business for over an hour of greatest hits including Suck You Dry, Let It Slide, Sweet Young Thing, and fanatical versions of “Touch Me, I’m Sick”, and My Brother the Cows’ “F.D.K.” before revealing their gloriously stoney side on “Hard-on For War”. The highlight of the night was easily the rather mind blowing trip down psychedelic blvd that continued past acid freak out lane onto lose your mind highway courtesy of the lethal combination of “When Tomorrow Hits” and “In ‘N’ Out of Grace”. FYI--Steve Turner is a guitar god, just saying.

It was another rowdy beer fest of a Mudhoney show complete with quite a few brave indoor crowd surfers, many of whom knocked over Mark Arm’s mic as they were tossed on stage like rag dolls over and over again. You’ve got to love how a city known for being arms crossed music snobs always cuts loose for the mighty Mudhoney, even if it means drinking like sailors on a Monday night. Sleepy Sun opened with an impressive fuzzed out psychedelic sound that was music to my ears. I will be sure to look into them further.

  1. This show was a blast! Like you, I was wishing I could have surrendered to my inner alcoholic and imbibed more. Regardless, it was the most fun I've had at a show in a long, long time.
