I gotta confess, I missed the opening band. The Rendezvous is down the street from Shorty's Pinball Bar and it was the day before the NW Pinball and Gameroom Show. I had every intention of seeing the opening act, but I went to Shorty's, played pinball and ran into tons of friends I only see during Pinball Conventions.
So I arrived at the Jewel Box Theater a little on the late side, and missed the opening band. But I did catch Diminished Men - very cool movie soundtrack music. Diminished Men are a 3 piece roadtrip-jazz band that play music that reminds me of chase sequences in movies.
Imagine songs that start off slow and suspenseful, then breaks into fast allegro. Imagine a protagonist dodging through alleys and then sprinting when he meets his enemy. There you have Diminished Men's music.
Very fitting that a David Lynch inspired instrumental band would play a rock show for Seattle's TRULY Independent Film Festival.
I have one problem with this band. Don't get me wrong, I love Diminished Men's surf guitar, spaghetti western sound, but... TURN OFF THE SMOKE MACHINE!!
The smoke machine fired up and the tiny little Jewel Box Theater filled with fog instantly. Smoke Machines make for rad pictures, but its tough being in the audience and breathing that broken microwave smell.
Smoke machine aside, I love Diminished Men's film noir feel, and I love their timing. So many bands are predictable, but Diminished Men keep to an unpredictable, surprising time scope.
