Sometimes it takes a crappy circumstance like a good friend’s serious illness to bring defunct bands back together, as is the case with the Team Natalie Benefit tonight at the Crocodile and the brief resurrection of Kill Rock Stars alumni -- Bangs and The Need. Natalie Cox was a former employee of Kill Rock Stars and has been fighting a rare and aggressive form of cancer since July 2009. Tonight four excellent former Kill Rock Stars bands are coming together in hopes of raising money to help with her costly medical bills. Bangs were knee high boot deep in the Riot Grrrl movement of the 90’s -- despite not being particularly fond of the pigeonhole identification – and released records on KRS from 1997-2004. They also shared stages with the like of Karp, Unwound, Sleater-Kinney and The Gossip in their heyday which must not be overlooked. Heavy female "queercore" duo The Need also from Olympia, released a couple 7 inches on KRS in the late nineties, and broke up in 2001. Joining these one time misfits will be C Average and Thrones. C Average have been playing their heavy instrumental geek rock since 1998 and drone masters Thrones otherwise known as that fuzz bass wielding drone master Joe Preston, just keeps on keeping on -- making people shit themselves with crushing bass tones since 1969. As far as I've heard The Need and Bangs are reuniting for the three Team Natalie Benefit shows only, so tonight marks a rare musical opportunity that must not be missed if possible.
