0 SHOW REVIEW: CHBP Kick Off Jam = LAME.
I had high hopes for the Dickies sponsored “Capitol Hill Block Party Kick Off Jam--the big party before the block party or at least that was how it was billed. Instead it was a sparsely attended event that saw Jerry and I sitting in an empty VIP area?
I did not feel important.
Not sure what went wrong because the bill was impeccable. Seattle’s own Unnatural Helpers rocked their asses off as they tend to do but I couldn’t help shaking my head in disgust seeing them all gussied up in some Dickies issued red jump suits. Bullshit corporate gimmicks suck. I hope UH got paid.
The Croc remained half full most of the night, even though it was rumored that 3x as many people RSVP’d than The Croc could actually hold. Though I suppose this demonstrates a real flaw in the upswing of corporately sponsored free events that have been popping up more and more often-- people are smarter than that and do not want to be sold crappy products.
So why did we bother?
Fucking Obits was on the bill. Obits people. I know they were scheduled for the mainstage on Saturday of block party but who misses an opportunity to see Rick Froberg and Obits more than once in a weekend? Plus, it was FREE, this event was FREE. Seemed like a solid opportunity to me.
I was wrong and it sure painted a thick coat of shit over an otherwise killer show knowing that Dickies ulterior motive has to have been getting as many people's email addresses as possible so they can send a lifetime of spam coupons for 30% off some ugly as fuck cargo coveralls. I hate when clothing lines, liquor companies and the like get involved with music. If Southern Comfort starts a record label, I’m going on a shooting spree.
Closing the evening was Holy Fuck, and they were pretty cool. I wasn’t floored nor did I utter Holy F! at any time during their set, but they are good at what they do – it’s a matter of musical preference.
One plus of the evening is we scarfed pizza at Trib and have video of the bands-- kick ass video courtesy of the SRG video guru himself Jerry Howard. So that rules. Enjoy!
