0 SHOW PREVIEW: Hunting Parties 2010

Pick your poison motherfuckers, Hunting Parties 2010 is here and it is brutal. Think 3 days, 5 venues, and 1…2…3…4…35 of the most obscure crust, hardcore, and doom bands you could group together all playing this very weekend. This festival is hardcore man.

It’s certainly a festival devoted to extremists -- extreme bands and extreme music connoisseurs. Hunting Parties is no joke. For a novice it’s like walking into Zion’s Gate on Capitol Hill and rummaging through their astonishing black metal section -- so many bands, so many unfamiliar indecipherable names, but you know there's good shit in those crates.

So where to go? Who to see? It can be a little overwhelming. Even an avid metal fan like me, who has gained a wealth of knowledge on the subject over the years, is scratching my head juuuuuust a little bit. A good place to start is the Dropdead / Brainoil show at Neumos. This is the top dog. Brainoil is sludge and doom metal personified – thick like their name suggests. They have played very infrequently over the past 5 years so now is your chance. Also a top booking is Dropdead, a hugely influential crust punk band from Providence, Rhode Island, and with killer locals Iron Lung and Samothrace also on the bill it’s a sure thing.

The more I think about it the more I realize how much interesting stuff is spread throughout the 3 days and it’s kind of making my head spin. Some of these bands haven’t played Seattle in 20 years such as Wehrmacht, others are up and coming like massive local doom troop Sod Hauler and instrumental stoner rockers-- Lethe.

Hunting Parties isn’t your typical heavy music festival but I suppose you can take solace in the fact that the bands billed are about as fucking real as they come, and the people who will be attending these shows are true defenders of the faith. All the way down to the grime on their Assück patched, metal studded black denim jackets.
