0 Burke Eglington's (Caligula / Bitches Crystal) Top Releases of 2012

2012 Top 5 & 1/2:

These are hard because there is always so many that I don’t want to leave out. If you audited me and
looked at what was playing in my car right now it would likely be dance pop music of a middle school
demographic, but those my issues to work on SO:

1. Bastard Noise/Skulldozer: Infectious Powerviolence grooves to Wood’s caveman roars.
Beautiful. Actually came out in 2011 (wink), but who’s counting? Closer to M.I.T.B than noise,
which is why I like it so much! Kills indy folk dead and smashes acoustic guitars over the right
heads.

2. Napalm Death/Utilitarian: It’s Napalm Death with occasional saxophone from John Zorn!
What more can you want? Sure it’s not Scum but it’s 2012! Work with me here. Saw them a
couple months back and they still bring it. This album is a logical evolution for this band and
indeed a successful effort. You need blast beats served to you on a silver tray by these English
gentlemen. . with bread pudding.

3. Melvins / Freak Puke: This band is a national treasure and a Northwest Faberge egg. It’s hard
for them to do wrong and this album supports such a thesis. Let’s see if your band is playing 30
years from now!

4. Gaytheist/ Stealth Beats. So awesome. Gives me Portland envy. Melody with power. Glad this
came out on GTD and showcases the trio’s proper brand of refreshing, disruptive wreckage. Get
it.

5. Torche/ Harmonicraft. Heaviest pop band ever. A fine release. Can’t put my finger on exactly
why, but I have always loved this band. Maybe because Steve is having so much damn fun up
there? Maybe because the Floor reunion blew my face open and Torche is the tidy evolution of
Floor? Maybe because Harmonicraft could also win best artwork of 2012 as well. . .

***Honorable mention! Rush/ Clockwork Angels. If you are not a musician dude you won’t like
this. Ponytail Up! This band is soooo Canadian sounding. But dammit if I have always loved
these guys through good and bad, and this is good! Rush is punk- they even had Pushead do
artwork in the past! OK, I won’t die on that hill, but blast this in your Chrystler Lebaron with
your dreamcatcher feathers flapping in the wind and you will be off to Tim Horton’s wearing a
pewter dragon- holding -crystal necklace, denim shirt, and black socks and sandals in no time.

After last Friday's show at Chop Suey, I think its safe to say Caligula is one of the best if not THEE best new heavy band in Seattle. Burke also plays guitar in Bitches Crystal, another exciting new band in its own right. Definitely 2 stellar bands to check out in 2013!
