Amazing news today! The stoner metal super group Shrinebuilder has announced a west coast tour and March date in Seattle. This may be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see Scott Kelly of Neurosis, Wino of St. Vitus and Hidden Hand, Al Cisernos of Om and Sleep, and Dale Crover of the Melvins all sharing a stage at one time. 0 Killer Show Alert!: 3 Inches of Blood and Red Fang @ El Corazon

Vancouver and sometimes Tacoma natives 3 Inches of Blood are currently on tour in support of their killer 2009 release "Here Waits Thy Doom", and will make a pit stop here in Seattle on December 11th. The guys have played here countless times over the last 5 years, and for some reason each and everytime I have had the opportunity to see them live (easily over 15 times), I always went home with an extremely sore neck. There's an easy explanation for the sore neck muscles. 3IOB's brand of thrashy power metal kicks major butt. If you are a metal fan and have for some reason slept on the many epic live performances by 3 Inches of Blood in the city, I must say you have simply missed out.

You can certainly remedy this by making your way to El Corazon on the 11th to witness 3IOB 'Kill the Orcs' along side a stellar billing of a few of the northwest's better metal offerings in Portland's Red Fang, a John Pettibone (ex-Himsa) fronted Heiress, and H.M.P.

To prepare for the battle that will ensure check out this newly released 3 Inches of Blood video for "Battles and Brotherhood" off "Here Waits Thy Doom".

0 AIC Announces North American Tour and Seattle Date

Alice in Chains have announced dates for a North American tour set to kick off at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver on February 2. Tickets go on sale December 4 and 5 — fans can get more info at www.aliceinchains.com. The band is touring in support of its critically acclaimed new album, "Black Gives Way To Blue" (Virgin/EMI), which entered Billboard's Top 200 Albums Chart at No. 5, with first-week sales exceeding 126,000 copies.

The band's electrifying set list will spotlight classic hits and new favorites, including new single "Your Decision", which impacts radio on December 7. The band recently shot a video for the song with director Stephen Schuster, who they previously worked with on the video for "A Looking In View".

Los Angeles-based AIC fans can catch the band performing at the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas show at the Gibson Amphitheatre on December 12. Tickets will go on sale Saturday, November 21 and proceeds will benefit two local charities, Para Los Ninos and the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center. On November 24, the band will also perform three songs acoustically for a special Yahoo! Maximum Performance, which can be seen on Yahoo! Music.

SLAYER. MEGADETH. Two names synonymous with fierce, crunching power. Two bands whose histories are inevitably intertwined in defining the thrash/metal genre. Individually, their respective prowess and accomplishments are impressive; but together, they're brutal and unstoppable. MEGADETH and SLAYER will join forces to co-headline "American Carnage", the most blistering, the most explosive, and the most eagerly anticipated mega-tour of the winter — and you do not want to miss it.

"American Carnage" will kick off on January 18 in Seattle, Washington for a 26-date trek across North America that will include the six Canadian dates postponed earlier this month. Tickets for most shows go on sale this Friday, November 20. Ticketmaster is offering a special presale for most shows from Wednesday, November 18 at 10am until Thursday, November 19 at 10pm.

"American Carnage" is the first time that SLAYER and MEGADETH will have toured the U.S. together since 1991's epic "Clash of the Titans" tour. To celebrate that and in recognition of the tough economic times that many of their fans are having, MEGADETH and SLAYER have decided to roll back the price of a chunk of tickets at every U.S. show to the "1991 price" of $10.00. These specially-priced tickets will be limited and when they're gone, they're gone. Southern California's heavy fuzz rock legends FU MANCHU will release their eleventh full-length album, "Signs of Infinite Power", on October 20, 2009 via Century Media Records.

Recorded at Maple Studios in Santa Ana, California by the band and producer Sergio Chavez (MOTÖRHEAD, HELMET) and mixed by Andrew Alekel (FOO FIGHTERS, DANZIG), "Signs of Infinite Power" could well be dubbed "a reawakening" of FU MANCHU as the record delivers monstrous doses of the group's punk energy, hard rock drive and psychedelic crunch in spades. From the instant the album's lead track "Bionic Astronautics" soars from the speakers, it is undeniably evident that FU MANCHU is as primed and hungry as ever before. One of my favorite bands the mighty Fu Manchu announced last week that their new album entitled "Signs of Infinite Power" will drop October 20th in the US courtesy of Century Media Records. At this point this is the only info available but the Orange County stoner rockers have released a few tour dates including a date right here in Seattle. Scott Hill and crew will grace the stage at Neumos, Saturday October 24th. I've had the pleasure of seeing the Fu twice before once with COC, Alabama Thunderpussy, and Weedeater at Neumos and once at El Corazon with Valient Thorr. I think I'll go for a third helping because I'm know they will not disappoint.

3 Akimbo Covers Black Flag

Not sure what needs to be said about this announcement other than HOLY FUCK!! This is going to tear paint off the walls at the Comet. Those dollar bills on the Comet's ceiling will be untacked and are going to fall our heads from the intensity that Akimbo will bring covering 15 of the best Black Flag tunes ever. They are getting help from there friends Tad Doyle and members of Portland's Black Elk too. This will surely be a can't miss crushing killfest.

What the fuck happened to punk rock? These days a "punk" band might mean 9 people with no rhythm on stage banging pots and blowing into trumpets, or 30 year old xtreme sports enthusiasts with slim sunglasses and the perfectly frosted faux hawk and goatee singing "melodic hardcore", or chugga chugga emo-metal bands covering The Postal Service, or Fallout Boy, or even better, a DJ. A DJ?!?! And before this mess there was the whole punk/ska debacle... If Goldfinger didn't ruin it, No Doubt sure fucking did.

Arguably, BLACK FLAG is perhaps the purest form of "punk" that ever was. I don't need to tell you that they invented the concept of living on the road and touring until the wheels fall off. I don't need to tell you that they damned the critics and pushed their own creative limits at every stage of their existence. I don't need to tell you that they helped pioneer the concept of starting your own damn label to put out your own damn albums because, well, hey, fuck the majors. I don't need to tell you that they are the most sonically raw, visceral, purely channeled force of rage that has ever exploded on a stage. I don't need to tell you that albums like "Damaged", "My War", and "Slip it In" are legendary in all literal sense of the word...

I do need to tell you that on September 11th and 12th, members of Akimbo, Tad, and Black Elk will be gathering to perform 15 of Black Flag's most pounding songs. Why? Lets call it a reminder of what we used to have.

3 Stone Gossard's Hank Khoir at Teatro Zinzanni

Looks like during a little Pearl Jam downtime prior to the September 21st and 22nd shows in Seattle, Stone Gossard and Mirror Tent Music have teamed up to present The Hank Khoir at Teatro Zinzanni. The Hank Khoir is a collective of musicians assembled by Stone that play old school country songs in the vain of Hank Williams. They have played quite a few shows since the first one back in 2008 at the High Dive, including Tom Morrello's "Get Out the Vote" show at the Showbox prior to Obama's win, The Can Can in March and they even did a couple shows in New York City. Stone Gossard's infatuation with Hank Williams has spawned an awesome conglomerate of locals including Vince Mira, Shawn Smith, Pete Droge, Barb Ireland, Dejha Colantuono, Elaine Summers, Lonnie Marshall, Scribes, Keith Lowe, Branden Harper, DJ Bean, D'Vonne Lewis, Jeff Fielder, Regan Hagar, Skerik & Steve Moore, Hans Teuber and Stone himself. They'll sure to play a bunch of Hank Covers, Johnny Cash covers with Vince Mira in the house, and Stone has written quite a few tunes influenced by old Hank Williams stuff as well. For some reason he scraped the release of his latest solo record, but I believe they still have downloads of a few of those songs out on Pearl Jam's site. This group of musicians including my favorite guitar/banjo whiz Jeff Fielder of Jeff Fielder and the Dinosaurs or Sera Cahoones touring band will surely make for a nice little evening of music. If you haven't heard the Khoir's versions of Prince's 1999, or Mororhead's "Ace of Spades", it's worth checking out. I'm assuming they also have something special planned too as the ticket price is a little high, but I suppose the show is at Teatro Zinzanni's Spiegeltent which is a little fancier than the High Dive and it's cheap PBR. (Taking nothing away from the High Dive at all)

1 Interesting Free Music Event in Sodo This Weekend!

Yesterday I received an email about a semi-secret event that is going on in Sodo this weekend. It seems there are some pretty sweet bands playing at a promotional event for Kia Motors called "The Soul Collective". It features live music and DJ sets all weekend, and the chance to test drive the new 2010 Kia Soul. The thing that caught my eye are the bands that are scheduled to play including No Age, Wavves, and Santigold. I'm really not sure what to expect from this event but I do know what to expect from those three groups. If you have sometime this weekend it might be worth heading down to the Sodo area for some great live music for.....Free!

4 Pearl Jam Announces 2009 Seattle Dates and Tour!!

I'm so happy right now! Pearl jam has finally announced some proper Seattle shows September 21st and 22nd at Key Arena! I'm at work right now and need to concentrate so I'll just give you the link straight to the source. All the info you need is at http://www.pearljam.com/. I will be heading out of town to marry my long time girlfriend in Hawaii, I'll be gone for a week so hopefully this will hold you over until I return. Plenty of coverage of the Capitol Hill Block Party to come. Wish me luck!!

Quick note, supposedly the new PJ track "The Fixer" is slated for radio and digital release July 20th, so keep you ears open for that.

0 Killer Show Alert: Meat Puppets and Dead Confederate!!

It has just come to my attention that Arizona alt-rock legends the Meat Puppets along with Georgia natives Dead Confederate will be rocking the Chop Suey Wednesday September 23rd. The Meat Puppets released a new album this year called "Sewn Together" which I have yet to sit down with but their 1984 album "Meat Puppets II" and for me 1994's "To High To Die" rank as classic alternative rock records. Not familiar with the Meat Puppets? Just listen to Nirvana's MTV Unplugged again, the songs "Lake of Fire", "Oh Me", and "Plateau" are Meat Puppet covers.

I'm equally excited about Dead Confederate, who have established themselves as probably one of the most promising alt-rock bands around. I was drawn to these guys immediately because they sound like they might have formed alongside Nirvana and Screaming Trees back in nineties instead of 2006. In my mind on record singer Hardy Morris has a very Kurdt-esque delivery, which mixes perfectly with their sometimes dark guitar driven sound. Their first full legnth "Wrecking Ball" was one of my favorite records of last year! I missed them at Sasquatch and at Chop Suey in 2008, but not this time. You can catch them twice in a month here in Seattle. They are scheduled to play Bumbershoot on Monday Sept. 7th and also the Chop Suey show September 23rd. I got mine, see you there!!

1 [NEWS] Nebula Announce Tour and New Album

**Update** Looks like Scott Kelly of Neurosis, The Entrance Band featuring Paz of A Perfect Circle fame (pretty cool psych stuff and on tour with SY right now), A Storm of Light (excellent Doom Metal/Post-Rock), and Valis featuring ex-Screaming Trees Guitarist Van Conner have been added as support for the Seattle Nebula show!! Pretty damn good lineup here!

Psychedelic stoner rock gods Nebula have announced a US tour and are readying the release of one of their best records to date “Heavy Psych”. I have had the pleasure of listening to this album a little early and it’s great. Let me tell you, vinyl was made for music like this. It has a little of everything for the stoner rock, psych rock and just plain heavy rock fans in all of us. “Heavy Psych” will be released on July 7th via Tee Pee Records who currently have a pretty respectable roster including: The Atomic Bitchwax, Kalas, Earthless, Graveyard, and Drunk Horse. NEBULA's current lineup of founder Eddie Glass on guitar/vocals, Tom Davies on bass/vocals and Rob Oswald on drums will be hitting the road August 4th and will make a pit stop in Seattle on August 7th at Chop Suey.

1 [KILLER SHOW ALERT] Down with The Melvins @ Showbox Sodo 8/11/09

How about this for a tour: The sludge all star team Down and the incomparable Melvins are teaming up for a summer tour and will share the same stage at Showbox Sodo on August 11th. This is an incredible bill, but also a strangely odd lineup as well. Being that Down usually attracts more of a mainstream metal crowd even though the band consists of underground sludge legends like Kirk Windstein of Crowbar, Jimmy Bower of Eyehategod, and Pepper Keenan of COC. It’s the presence of Pantera singer Phil Anselmo and Bass player Rex Brown that really brings the old-school Pantera fans out of retirement. The Melvins on the other hand draw a quite different group of heavy music fans, I don’t want to pigeon hole anyone but it’ll surely be interesting to see how some of the old-school Anselmo fans react to the Melvins. Both bands are heavier than a heavy thing so it should be a great night regardless, especially with the PBR tall boys flowing.

In 2006 Down announced it was finally going to release a new record and tour again after a long hiatus. One of their first shows was at El Corazon in front of jam packed crowd, club felt way over capacity. They put up this metal barricade in front of the stage, mainly in response to former Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell’s murder on stage in 2004. I saw Dimebag play on his last tour with Damage Plan at the same club, he was hanging in the El Corazon bar with the fans and it was awesome, but I’ll leave that for another post. The Down show was great, especially because everyone was wondering if Phil was going to be a mess. He proved he had cleaned up his act and Down tore the roof off. I‘ve seen Down 4 times now: Ozzfest 2002, El Corazon 2006, Vancouver 2007 with Megadeth and Heaven and Hell (worthy of another post as well), and Showbox Sodo in 2007.

The Melvins just celebrated their 25th anniversary give or take a few years at the Showbox at the Market with two shows on May 22nd and 23rd. These shows consisted of an early set by the Melvins of ’83 with original drummer Mike Dillard and Dale on bass. On the bill also was pre-grunge super group Green River, who reunited last summer at the SP20. Green River of course consists of Stone and Jeff of Pearl Jam, Mark and Steve of Mudhoney, Bruce of Mother Love Bone and Love Battery, and Alex Vincent on Drums. The Melvins then came out for a second set and played their seminal masterpiece “Houdini” in its entirety. I left at around 12:30 because I was leaving for Sasquatch the next morning and they were still playing. The Friday night Melvins show and the 3-day Sasquatch weekend was one for the ages, but again another post sometime down the road.

There is a lot of stuff I could talk between my experiences with these two bands, as I have seen the two bands not together a total of at least 12 times (Down 4, Melvins 8). This will be a kick ass show, very different crowds, and different vibes but two equally heavy bands to say the least. Presale on Now! I Got Mine!

1 [NEWS] Sunny Day Real Estate Announce Reunion and Seattle Gig!

After what feels like months upon months of waiting after an initial rumor was leaked by 90’s 107.7 The End and newish KEXP DJ Marco Collins that Seattle’s own Sunny Day Real Estate had reunited and was gearing up for a tour, we have confirmation from numerous sources the first I believe to be Andy Harms of 107.7 The End's blog that the rumor is indeed true and that SDRE are playing a reunion gig in Seattle on October 16th at The Paramount. Last month Jeremy Enigk released one of the best records of the year so far, a solo outing called “OK Bear”, and played an amazing show at Neumos with a 13 piece orchestra. With the rumors swirling and the show booked many including I thought we might get an early sampling of Sunny Day as part of that show. Needless to say the SDRE reunion did not happen that night, but Enigk did hint and basically confirm the rumors during the show while responding to fans shouted song requests, which was exactly what I wanted to hear.

Late last week it was semi-officially announced that Sunny Day Real Estate with original members Jeremy Enigk, William Goldsmith, Dan Hoerner, and Nate Mendel would be going on tour, with initial dates scheduled in Atlanta, Houston, Hollywood, San Fran, Denver, Minneapolis and of course Seattle at The Paramount Theater on October 16th. The tickets for what will surely be an unforgettable reunion gig go on sale next week for $28. I’ll be sure to update this when I find out more about when to buy your tickets; it’ll sell out really fast!!

In addition, Sub Pop Records will re-issue both Diary and the band’s second full-length album, commonly known as LP2 (or “The Pink Album” for its entirely pink cover). Both re-mastered albums will include rare bonus tracks as well as newly written liner notes and will be released on both CD and LP Sept. 15, 2009, just prior to the start of the tour.
