0 CHBP: Built to Spill

Built to Spill played the most packed main stage set of the night for sure. I pulled myself away from another awesome Earth performance a little early to make sure I caught the majority of Built to Spill’s fan-chosen set and to my surprise it was a lot of work to get somewhere even close to the action.

As I worked my way closer to the front of the beer garden area much to the chagrin of some members of the crowd, I was greeted by an amazingly blue Seattle night sky, a few raindrops and an awesome live rendition of “Big Dipper”. The crowd was really into it. The two guys from Vancouver who were standing next to me videotaping the show while singing every word were a good example of how loyal fans were reacting to the song selection.

The majority of the other folks around me, including three guys from Scotland, would patiently wait to see what song was next, erupt on the first notes and then proceed to rock out. It’s always a cool experience when a crowd is excited for every song in the setlist. I suppose in this case it was because the fans got to vote for their favorites.

The highlight for me was the trio of “Goin’ Against Your Mind,” “Car” and “Carry the Zero.” The liveliness of the crowd and the perfectness of Doug Martsch and company made for one of my favorite performances of Block Party's first day. I did my best to get the whole setlist but missed whatever came before “Big Dipper,” hopefully it was “Cortez the Killer”.

Here’s what I got, it should be pretty close to what actually happened, but can’t remember exactly where “You Were Right” fit in:

Big Dipper
Else
Virginia Wheel Around the Fountain
Goin’ Against Your Mind
Car
Carry the Zero
