0 CHBP 2010: Real Estate (Video)

Flying all the way from New Jersey just to play this one show here in Seattle was a band that for the past year has probably blasted through my speakers more than any other.

Real Estate.

To me, seeing them took priority over every other band at this year's Block Party. Much like the Beach Fossils, Real Estate's sound definitely fits in with the whole tropical/beach vibe.

The unfortunate part of seeing them on this occasion though was that they were scheduled to play on the main stage, which meant scratching and clawing my way through the tightly packed sea of youngsters to the front. I did eventually make it though in one piece though, and thanks to a dude named Chris (who agreed to trade me spots), I stood front row.

When they were setting up, I was faced with yet another disappointment as I realized that guitarist Matt Mondanile (Ducktails, Parasails, Predator Vision) was nowhere to be seen. I later found out that he was on a tour with Ducktails on the East Coast, and filling in for him would be a close friend of the band and guitarist/vocalist of Family Portrait, Evan Brody. I also found out that Brody filling in was kind of last minute deal and he only had a chance to practice with the band one time.

Despite having to fight the main stage crowd, being held captive 25 feet from the stage behind barriers, and then not getting the chance to finally see one of my favorite musicians live-- Real Estate still did not disappoint.

Their set consisted of most of the tracks on their self-titled LP, one track off their "Reality EP", and even one song that has yet to be released. I don’t think the main stage crowd really understood their sound, as it can come across a little sedated, but I know one fan that definitely got his moneys worth.
