3 NW NOISE #12: Milk Music (Olympia)

By pure luck I stumbled upon Olympia fuzz-rockers, Milk Music, at what turned out to be an Olympia themed evening at the Comet back on December 2nd. I was in the house to see another Oly bi-product in rip-roaring metal act Christian Mistress, but before their set I found myself bouncing up and down in amazement to the sounds emanating the stage courtesy of opening act Milk Music. Milk Music played some of the finest fuzzy pop-rock I've heard since Dinosaur Jr. was in their heyday in the late-80's, early-90's. They had the crowd jumping, and the room was absolutely alive. Looking back, I have no idea how this show didn't end up on my "best of 2010" list.

Last week, I was able to catch up with drummer Joe Rutter up on Capitol Hill to pick up their just self-released 12" EP titled "Beyond Living", which features most of the tracks heard at the Comet on the 2nd including the killer title track "Beyond Living" in the video below. I finally had a chance to spin the thing New Years Day at the 2 Bit Saloon were I had a DJ gig. I wasn't quite sure what to expect but was already spinning a bunch of new stuff for the first time so I went for it. As soon as the beautiful driving fuzz of "Fertile Ground" rang out over the house sound system I was completely sold, and ended up playing the three tracks that make up side A consecutively. It's that great!

Milk Music are doing something incredibly fresh despite the sure nods to the past -- and I will say they have great taste in music. There are currently no bands in the area that sound like Milk Music, or are at least creating rock music this fun anyway. If you dig bands like Dino Jr. and even Seattle's own Kinski -- you will love Milk Music.

On a side note, there is something brewing in Olympia right now, and I plan on getting to the bottom of it. To be continued....

Note: Milk Music is currently without website, but you can read a brief bio on their Last.fm page.

  3. Just heard these guys playing over a sound system recently at a house party. I liked it so much I had to ask who it was. Def sounded like a band from the late 80's/90's that I missed. Would love to get my hands on some of their stuff. Any info would be great.
